Gymnastics Scheme of Work

To understand and be able to demonstrate good body tension and posture in various travelling movements. Students should be able to perform the forward, circle and log roll using correct technique, and depending on ability, a variation of the cartwheel and backward roll. Students should understand the difference between rolling and wheeling (cartwheel) and be able to describe the 3 axes of rotation involved in each. By the end of the scheme students should have a basic understanding of travelling through flight and should be able to demonstrate correct take off and landing technique, as well as a clear body shape whilst airborne. Students should be able to link each of the methods of travel learned during the scheme into individual and partner sequences both on the floor and on low apparatus. The students are to be constantly asked and tested on their knowledge and understanding of how to develop speed, height, power and precision; evaluate performances; analyse strengths and weaknesses; whilst developing, adapting and refining skills, strategies and compositional ideas to produce high levels of performances, high quality techniques and routines. Students should be able to observe and appreciate the work of others and offer informed and positive feedback to performing groups. Students should also understand the importance of raising heart rate at the start of the session and be able to demonstrate stretches appropriate to gymnastics.
