Throwing Only - Scheme Of Work

Throwing Only - Scheme Of Work

The students should have a developing knowledge and understanding of throwing within Athletics and be able to perform the shot putt and discus using a simple pushing and slinging technique from a side-on starting position and should understand the need for the whole body contributing to the throw. Students should understand the need for strict safety precautions and procedures that are used by the teacher during each of the lessons. Students should also understand the importance of preparing for and recovering from exercise safely and effectively and to know the principles. As the students progress through the phases they should incorporate more complex movements in the discus and shot using a larger rotation moving from a low to a high body position whilst throwing appropriately weighted implements.
As they develop their techniques in the Shot put, Discuss, and Javelin the students will begin to analyse and understand the importance of the speed, angle and height of release; whilst developing their acceleration, power and strength within these events. They will become very capable of measuring and officiating these throwing events. Students should also be able to use ICT and video analysis to analyse the technique of others and be able to describe differences in technique between performers as well as attempting to describe the reasons for these differences using basic mechanical throwing terms.
Finally, the students should also be able coach, analysing and evaluating performance, giving responses and feedback to others using technical, mechanical and physiological terms in explanation which will also help to develop skills, knowledge and understanding. The students will also have developed their own training diary over the period which they will use to teach / coach others in their chosen and specialised throwing areas, using training, activities and skills that they have performed to develop theirs, and other student’s throwing skills and techniques.
